Baby Teeth Timeline

The appearance of your baby’s first tooth is a huge milestone, the beginning of the end of that gorgeous gummy grin, but the start of a new era. For most children, their first teeth will appear from around 6 months and will be quickly followed by more and more until by around the age of 30 months when your child will have a full set of 20 milk teeth from incisors to molars, which will last them until they are around 6 or 7 when they’ll be replaced by adult teeth.

So what teeth will arrive first and how soon will the others follow? We’re looking at the order of tooth appearance in babies, which ones will arrive and when….

Central Incisors

The bottom central incisors are usually the first two teeth to make an appearance at between 6 and 10 months. If you feel your baby’s gums, you may notice a sharp lumpy bump and may even be able to see the tooth just before it breaks through the gum. Its just as likely though that you will see it as it starts to poke through!

The top central incisors won’t let the bottom ones hog the limelight for long! They usually follow in quick succession, arriving a couple of months later, often between 8 and 12 months. So as your baby approaches their first birthday, 4 of their 20 milk teeth could already be smiling at you!

Lateral Incisors

Just as your little one is getting used to their first four teeth, the next four will start to appear. Upper lateral incisors are most likely to emerge first when your baby is between 9 and 13 months old, followed quickly by the lower lateral incisors at 10-16 months.

Canine Cuspids

Next in line are the Canine Cuspid teeth – although next to the incisors, they actually don’t emerge until the first molars have made an appearance. So these pointy little biters won’t arrive until your baby is 16- 23 months…

First Molars

As your little one is getting to grips with new foods and textures, they’re going to want to chew properly! It’s there fore a good thing that between 13 and 19 months, their fist molars start to appear.
