Piles or haemorrhoids often develop in pregnancy and although they tend to get smaller after delivery, they do not disappear. It is usual for them to become obvious again in subsequent pregnancies. They are, as you probably know, varicose veins in and around the rectum and anal canal. They are formed in the same way as varicose veins in the legs, and are made worse by straining and constipation. Standing for long periods of time also tends to make this problem worse. Walking is very beneficial.

There is unfortunately no magical treatment for piles, and the only way to get rid of them is by surgery. However, there are many things that you can do to avoid problems related to your piles. Keeping fit and active will help to ensure that you have a regular bowel habit. Drinking plenty of water and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables is also important. Avoid straining, as this will tend to worsen symptoms from piles, and if constipation becomes a problem, use laxatives. Creams, ointments and suppositories tend to be prescribed when piles are causing discomfort and itching, and those containing steroids are particularly useful when piles are very inflamed and troublesome. If your piles are troublesome at the moment, it would be worth arranging for your GP to see you so that he or she can examine you.

As your baby grows and the obstruction to blood flow increases, the problem is likely to continue or may even worsen. On a positive note, the haemorrhoids are likely to become much less of a problem after delivery. Surgical treatment for piles is not undertaken in pregnancy as it tends to be unsuccessful due to the effect of the pregnancy hormones which cause dilatation of blood vessels. If your piles continue to cause problems for you after delivery, your GP may suggest that you are referred to a specialist so that surgery can be considered.
