How to build a capsule maternity wardrobe
‘Maternity wear’. If those 2 words alone make you visualise pound coins slipping through your fingers then don’t panic! You don’t have to spend hundreds of pounds to look and feel great throughout your pregnancy. One fantastic way of saving your pennies is to invest in a capsule wardrobe – a handful of brilliant basics to create a solid foundation to your maternity wardrobe. Some women can get away without buying any maternity clothes, but most will find that they need a few essentials to comfortably and confidently get them through the 9 months. Read our tips on how to create your perfect capsule maternity wardrobe now.
Jeans
If you are still trying to squeeze into your pre-pregnancy jeans – then don’t worry – we promise that you will find your dream maternity jeans. Most high-street stores who stock a maternity range will have maternity jeans – and just like regular jeans, there isn’t a one size fits all, so definitely do shop around. Most maternity ranges are online only unfortunately, but do take advantage of free click and collect services and get a few styles and sizes sent to your local store to try on. We recommend a blue pair and a black pair to solve weekend and work maternity wear challenges.
Leggings
Maternity leggings are a great addition to your capsule wardrobe. Wear under dresses, jumpers and tunics, they are a great option for lounge wear too as are much more comfy than jeans due to their soft cotton fabric. Look for great stretch, good coverage when stretched and a fabric which washes well and make sure you grab a couple of pairs! Similarly to jeans, they come in both under and over the bump styles.
Tops – vest, tees and long sleeves
Brilliant basics like maternity vests and tees are an essential part of your maternity wardrobe as they provide a strong foundation to the rest of your wardrobe. In your earlier months, they can be worn for a bit of extra coverage under your non-maternity tops (which may just be starting to ride up a little over your bump) and then in the latter months wear them under open shirts, cardigans or jackets. We’d recommend keeping it simple – one black, one white and one Breton striped (essential in a maternity wardrobe).
Underwear
With your body changing shape a lot over the next few months, it’s important to make sure you are wearing a comfortable and supportive bra. We recommend you get fitted by a specialist (many brands on the highstreet offer this service). They can also advise you on when you may need to get measured again throughout your pregnancy and beyond, plus the types of bra you should go for.
A dress that makes you feel amazing
Whether it’s for work or a special occasion – getting a maternity dress which fits you beautifully, is comfortable and flatters your new and evolving body shape is a super addition to a maternity wardrobe. If it’s a casual look you are going for, simple jersey fabric gives you the stretch you need. For work, an LBD or any neutral shade will be a firm staple dressed up with accessories. A wedding or evening do in the diary? There are plenty of choices online whether maxi, midi or mini, chiffon, cotton or lace – whatever your preference. Treat yourself to something which makes you feel stylish, confident and above all, like you.
