Many women who have a termination of pregnancy worry about possible effects on a future pregnancy. In fact, it is highly unlikely that there would be any long-term effects from having had a termination. There is a possible risk of complications when anyone has a termination of pregnancy, including infection and perforation of the uterus, but this risk is very small. Even when infection does occur after the operation, it is very unlikely that it would affect the woman’s ability to have a successful pregnancy in the future. A serious complication such as perforation of the uterus might result in a problem that reduced the chances of successful pregnancy, but again this is very unlikely. As long as the termination is uncomplicated, there is no reason to worry about your ability to have children in the future. In fact, the fact that you have conceived once means that you are likely to be able to conceive again, and is therefore reassuring. If you have conceived again, there is also no need to worry about the pregnancy. You are at no greater risk of problems than anyone else.

It is normal to feel some guilt and concern after a termination of pregnancy. If this is becoming a problem for you, it might be worth discussing it with your GP. He or she may suggest that you see a counsellor to further explore your feelings about the operation, and to give you a chance to come to terms with what you have been through. If you’re pregnant again, you need to come to terms with the termination so that you can move on and enjoy this pregnancy.
