There are many women with Crohn’s disease who conceive and give birth without any major problems. However, as with all long-term diseases,  general ill-health can lead to a lack of ovulation.

Generally speaking, good control of your Crohn’s, maintaining your weight, a good diet, avoiding dehydration and treating relapses quickly and effectively will give you the best chance of pregnancy. Timing intercourse will not help. Women who manage to conceive at a time when their inflammatory bowel disease (either Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis) is active may have a difficult time in pregnancy.

Theoretically, the steroids which are released naturally during pregnancy should help control the disease, but this isn’t always the case. Adequate treatment is just as important before and during pregnancy as it is at other times.
