Your baby is very well protected in the womb, certainly well enough to counter any bumps from a toddler. The main types of injury to your abdomen that can cause problems are those resulting from seat belts during car accidents and from adult punches. However, even in these cases, there have been many reports of babies being born without any problems despite their mothers having been involved in car crashes or, unhappily, having been the victims of domestic violence. Obviously, it would be wise to prevent your toddler from standing on your bump, but there are also some other precautions that you should be aware of when looking after him. These relate to lifting and carrying him, and are more to do with protecting your body from injury than protecting the baby. Your ligaments are much softer when you’re pregnant, due to the influence of pregnancy hormones, and therefore your back and hips are much more vulnerable to injury. When picking your son up, make sure you bend your knees, and when you’re carrying him, avoid supporting his weight on your hips. I hope that this allays your fears and that you enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.
