You’re quite justified in feeling indignant, and as someone who had the opposite problem (“Pregnant? Where is it?” when I was 38 weeks pregnant), I know it becomes very boring and upsetting after a while. However, you do need to keep a sense of proportion about this and, I would say, a sense of humour. You know that your baby is just the right size for his or her age, because the measurement that counts is exactly right. And even if you are actually growing a biggish baby, be proud of yourself. Your body is doing a great job! Another reason to keep positive is that some women get bigger at different rates during their pregnancy, so you may well slow down a bit later. If you can’t face all the questions and comments, why not get a funny T-shirt printed with something like ‘baby elephant on board’! To be honest, though, you can quite rightly ask people to mind their own business. Talk to your mother and let her know how you are feeling about your size, and if possible get her to field some of the comments for you, if she is around. One physical reason why you may seem to be getting large quickly is if your stomach muscles have separated more than normal. This is more common if you have had children already. It can be rectified once you have had your baby by doing lots of abdominal exercises. The most common medical condition that results in large babies is gestational diabetes. Your midwife will be checking for this when she tests your urine. Glucose in your urine can indicate this condition. Try and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and don’t let ignorant people get you down!
