Shivering and aching are common symptoms just before or during a period. It has been suggested that they are due to the release of substances called prostaglandins from the lining of the uterus as it breaks down. This happens quite normally and it is not due to a hormone imbalance. There does not seem to be any connection with reduced fertility in women who have such symptoms.
