Cushing’s is very rare in pregnancy. It is more often associated with infertility. It is usually caused by a benign (non-cancerous) growth either in the pituitary gland or in the adrenal gland. In most cases, surgery is necessary and this can be undertaken in pregnancy. Ultrasound scan and either MRI or CT scans are needed to establish the exact cause of the problem.

Cushing’s in pregnancy does increase the risk of problems in the pregnancy and at delivery. In particular, there is an increased risk of prematurity and an increased risk of loss of the baby, primarily due to associated conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. There are also risks for you, especially an increased risk of pre-eclampsia and an increased risk of infection after caesarean if this were to be necessary.
