Many women report this kind of pain, and while there are several explanations for it, very rarely is it associated with major problems. The most important factor in determining the relative seriousness of the pain is whether the baby is moving well. If it is, then the cause is unlikely to be serious.

Common causes of this kind of pain are the effect of hormones on the supporting ligaments in the top of your hip joints, or the baby lying on a nerve. Both of these can have consequences as debilitating as the ones you seem to be experiencing. However, they have no bearing on labour and they can become resolved at any point (definitely when you have had your baby, if not before). If the episodes become more frequent or prolonged, you can be referred to a physiotherapist for treatment.

If you get abdominal pain that’s severe, constant, does not subside and is associated with the baby not moving, you should seek medical help as a matter of urgency.

2990-Why are my stools black? Are you taking iron tablets or folic iron tablets with added iron? Iron medications often change the colour of faeces, as may certain dark-coloured foods, if eaten in quantity. Black stools may (very rarely) be a sign of bleeding within the gut (the blood changes colour as it passes on down through the intestines). If you are still unsure as to the cause, or remain concerned, I suggest you talk with your midwife or GP next time you attend for an antenatal check-up.
