Prolactin is one of the hormones secreted by the pituitary gland, which is a tiny gland just beneath the brain. More prolactin is produced at times of stress, in response to drugs, during pregnancy, by thyroid disease or if a tiny tumour develops in the pituitary gland. Raised levels can certainly effect ovulation and lead to subfertility and often to infrequent periods. Levels that are raised but less than 1,000 are usually the response to stress, but it must have been one of the other causes that has increased your prolactin for it to reach such a high level. The first thing to exclude is pregnancy. Even if you have developed a tumour of the pituitary (known as a microadenoma), it can easily be treated with drugs and is very unlikely to affect your long-term health.
