The average time for a normal couple to conceive is six cycles (six months if the woman has a regular 28-day cycle). However, many couples take considerably longer than this. If you have been trying to conceive for two years, having intercourse regularly (at least twice a week), then your doctor is right to refer you to a specialist at the hospital.
Most GPs would consider it appropriate to organise some initial investigations while you wait to be seen at the hospital. The investigations which can be organised by your GP include blood tests to check for medical problems which can affect a woman’s ability to conceive and to establish whether you are ovulating, and analysis of the your partner’s semen. It would be reasonable to get in touch with your GP again and ask whether this would be possible, or alternatively to see another GP and request that these tests are organised.
