Procedures such as IUI or IVF probably work in the main by getting as many healthy sperm as close to the egg as possible. In IVF we can put them closer than with IUI, and therefore fewer sperm are needed. ICSI is different, as a single sperm is physically injected into the egg, so it can be used for extremely low sperm counts – such as less than 1 million per ml.
