Everyone ‘carries’ their babies slightly differently during pregnancy. The average sizes suggested in books and magazines for various weeks of pregnancy are just that – averages. Your own build, body length, and pelvis shape will all affect how far up your uterus measures compared to the usual ‘landmarks’ of the symphysis pubis (pubic joint), belly button and so on.

It could be that your uterus is retroverted (backwards tilting). This is the case for around 10 per cent of women. Although the uterus straightens up after the first trimester and grows as normal, it may feel significantly lower than usual in the first 12 weeks or so.

Provided you are reasonably sure of your dates (and, if appropriate, these have been confirmed by an early ultrasound scan), there should be no cause for concern at this stage. Have confidence that your body knows what it is doing in the great adventure of pregnancy. Have confidence, too, in your own feelings and observations. Your midwife’s and GP’s findings are only part of a larger picture. Do you feel you are growing week by week? Are your clothes getting tighter? Do you feel, deep down, that all is well? Your own feelings can be a good guide.
